The Secret of Bibinje – A Great Historical Discovery

Around ten graves, mostly featuring sepulchral architecture beneath the church of St. Peter in Petrina, were explored. They were documented and studied, with the majority of work being done on the 5-meter-long church wall in 2014. The most significant discovery was jewellery, including rings and earrings, primarily belonging to the middle class from the late medieval and early modern periods.

The earrings discovered in the graves date from the 12th to 15th centuries and include three-stranded twisted rice, three granulated bead earrings, and three-stranded strawberry earrings. In 2014, two valuable gold temple earrings with a vertical almond-shaped or oval shape (measuring 7 cm in height and weighing 11.99 g and 13.09 g), were found in grave 7, to the delight of the researchers.

The earrings feature a small bead on the sides and are crafted using filigree and granulation techniques. In the centre, a larger oval bead is divided by filigree threads into bands, each decorated with alternating small and large granulated triangles.

The strawberries have contrasting granulated triangles. Connection points and tops are braided with filigree thread, and the space between the two central strawberries is decorated with a series of circles and large granules.

The space along the edges is adorned with a string of delicate filigree threads, attached by inserting the link into one of the vertically arranged strawberries. These earrings referred to as Bibinjke, have a close counterpart in the pair discovered at Vrbica in the Šibenik hinterland but differ in size.

Bibinjke are made of gold, while the latter are gold-plated silver and date from the second half of the 9th to the first half of the 10th century. This is an exceptional discovery of early Croatian jewellery that deserves pride.

This grave belongs to an earlier phase of the church, while most of the findings are related to its later, probably late medieval stage. The church was in use until the 17th century.
